About Third Baptist
Our Mission
As a congregation of the universal church of Jesus Christ, Third Baptist Church of Chicago is the Lord’s great house committed to serving humanity holistically, responding to physical and spiritual needs, as we live out the greatest commandment to love and fulfill the great commission to make disciples.
Core Values
Our Vision
Third Baptist will fulfill our mission by addressing the deep disconnect between the church and community with love, compassion, empathy, and justice at the core of our existence, having a multigenerational impact, bringing healing to the hearts and spirits of those we serve as we seek communal justice, freedom, and liberation for humanity.
Our Core Values Include
- Developing new disciples, learning the faith to increase in souls added to evangelism and servant leadership of the church
- Being a safe haven for Christian and all youth development
- Establishing and sharing resources throughout the community, securing provisions for vulnerable populations
- Educating the underprivileged and/or underserved
Our Culture
Under the leadership of Pastor T.D. Hughes, we strive to create a dramatic shift in church culture. Pastor Hughes is true to the Word of God and seeks to create a church culture that is radically different from that of the world.
As “One Heart” led in the Spirit of Unity, we are intentional about creating, shaping, and maintaining a healthy culture that impacts people’s lives, as well as builds the short- and long-term mission of the church.
The Third Baptist culture can be difficult to put into words, but easily felt. Perhaps the simplest and best way is for you to come and experience Third Baptist! You can visit us every Sunday morning for our 11:00 AM worship service.
What We Believe
Acts 2:44 ESV captures one of the great principles of the Christian church as it says, “And all who believed were together and had all things in common.” Third Baptist Church of Chicago unapologetically stands on five core beliefs. Together, these shared beliefs identify who we are, rally us toward what we desire to accomplish, and unite us ALL in fellowship.
The Bible is the Inspired Word of God.
(2 Timothy 3:15-17, 1 Thessalonians 2:13, 2 Peter 1:21)
There is only one true and living God.
(John 8:54-59), (Genesis 1 & 2), (Matthew 28:19)
Jesus Christ is the only means of Salvation.
(Acts 4:12 & John 14:6)
We All contribute to the mission of the church.
(1 Corinthians 12:12-27), (Acts 1:8 and Mark 16:15-16)
We believe in the Gifting of the Holy Spirit.
(Galatians 5:22-23), (1 Corinthians 12:1-11), (1 Corinthians 12:31, 14:1)
Our Ordinances
Holy Baptism
(Matthew 28:19), (Romans 6:4)
Baptism is the outward sign of our inward Christ-like transformation. If you have received Jesus as your savior and have not been baptized, we believe that baptism is the next step. It symbolizes washing away the old and stepping into your new life in Christ.
Holy Communion
(Matthew 28:19), (Romans 6:4)
The Bread and The Cup
Holy Communion is the very fabric of our remembrance that enables us to draw near to the sacrifice Christ made for us on the cross. It is a reminder that we should consume Christ as we become the church — a community of believers gathered together to learn and live out the character and call of Christ within the world. 1 Corinthians 11:28-29 reminds us to examine ourselves for as we eat and drink at the communion table, we must do so by embodying the character of Christ.
